Are you feeling insecure about your career advancement?
What, exactly, are you afraid of?
Here’s a list… You pick:
- Getting yelled at by your boss
- Being fired
- Having your company closed down due to lack of business or a pandemic (Covid-19?!)
- Your company being acquired and they get let you go
- Not getting promoted
- Making promises or commitments you can’t keep
- Doing the wrong thing
- Getting caught using the photocopier for your personal stuff
- Not knowing the answer
- Asking too many questions
- Looking like an idiot
Here’s the big news on ensuring job security:
If your career strategy is to lie low, do your job, follow instructions, and HOPE that nobody notices you,
A) Nobody will ever notice you and
B) You are actually increasing the chances of something bad actually happening.
If, on the other hand, you develop a reputation as a person who is
- pushing the envelope,
- taking intelligent initiatives,
- challenging yourself and your organization to go to the next level,
- as well as using your influence to get good stuff done,
you will have the world’s best job security.
If you never pretend to know all the answers, nobody will judge you when you say,
“I don’t know yet I will find out by the end of the day though.”
If you surround yourself with a team that depends on you to lead them through the next big thing as well as the bad times, you all benefit.
You can’t shrink your way to greatness.
