It could also be slowly killing you.
Sorry, I can’t sugar coat it…
Some quick stats:
40% saying they’ve experienced burnout during the pandemic specifically.
37% are currently working longer hours than usual since the pandemic started.
Why Burnout is on the rise
- Zoom or virtual meeting burnout.
- WFH burnout.
- Doing online learning/homeschooling (esp. with multiple technology platforms) for your children burnout
- Elder care PLUS work PLUS childcare PLUS community support …
- Even – reading articles about what you SHOULD be doing to advance your career or health (!)
GET BURNOUT SUPPORT:
“51% of workers agreed that they had the emotional support they needed at work to help manage their stress”.
- Understand and become aware of what you are doing and how you are behaving. Setup a routine and give yourself some time and space to do what you enjoy. If you cannot go to the gym, read a book in a sunbeam.
- Additionally, try to separate your workspace from your private space, no matter how small your living quarters are. This division will help you keep a balance between your work and your personal life, no matter how entangled they are right now.
- Don’t be afraid to reach out to your managers and ask them precisely what they expect of you and the team. Keep connected with them on how those expectations are unfolding in reality.
- It’s essential that managers / bosses also receive training on leading virtual teams. Remind them that the leadership skills that apply in the physical workplace should also be used virtually. Overall, try reduce (not increase) job demands. Also, increase support to your teams and be able to recognize stress. Keep the lines of communication open. LISTEN and ASK a lot of questions.
- For managers and companies, set parameters for your team working at home. Give your employees a day off. Don’t send out emails after work hours as often your employees may feel obligated to answer or feel guilty if they don’t.
- It also helps to engage in some form of virtual socialization, such as a virtual birthday celebration or virtual team happy hour (eg. at the end of the week).
- Yet most importantly, control the urge to be available to work and being online 24/7!

Many of my clients need a ‘different’ type of support during intense times:
- Discussing strategies for work happiness and finding harmony between work and the home/social situation.
- Confusion on if ‘now is the time to be looking for a new job’
- How to keep networking and connecting on a virtual basis.
- Even doing virtual interviews (often for the very first time!)
There is so much change from the norm and change is hard to navigate by yourself.
Your career may feel like it is going sideways or becoming buried under an extra stress load. Don’t try to do it alone.
